What is Chiropractic?

chirologoChiropractic (pronounced kī-rō-prak’tik) is a healthcare profession that focuses primarily on correction of subluxations.  Subluxations are most commonly found in the spine.  A subluxation is a minor misalignment of a joint that if not corrected can lead to a variety of symptoms depending on the location of the subluxation.  For example, subluxations in the cervical spine (neck) may lead to headaches or arm symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness.  Subluxations in the thoracic spine (middle back) may cause pain between the shoulder blades, pain when taking a deep breath, or indigestion.  Lumbar (low back) subluxations commonly cause low back pain, but can also be accompanied by hip/groin/buttock pain and/or leg symptoms similar to those listed for the arm.  The lumbar and sacral (tailbone) regions are generally involved in cases of sciatic nerve irritation, commonly known as sciatica.
